Nature & Science Painting 12 Days Challenge

Nature & Science Painting 12 Days Challenge

A 12-Day Journey of Observation, Curiosity & Art

What happens when you slow down enough to truly observe the natural world?

Not just glance at it for a moment, but really notice it.

The tiny veins running through a leaf.
The softness of moss growing across a stone.
The shimmer inside a water droplet.
The delicate structure hidden inside a flower.

Something quietly changes when we begin observing nature this way.

We stop rushing.
We stop trying to create perfect art.
And instead, we begin exploring.

That is exactly why I created the Nature & Science Painting Challenge, a gentle 12-day creative journey designed to combine watercolor, sketchbook practice, curiosity, and scientific observation into one peaceful artistic experience.

A Creative Nature Journal for Curious Artists

This challenge is not about creating polished masterpieces.

It is about slowing down enough to notice details you may have never seen before.

Over the course of 12 days, we explore small natural subjects together: leaves, roots, mushrooms, bees, moss, seed pods, butterflies, grass fields, and tiny natural textures often overlooked in everyday life.

Watercolor Nature Challenge

One day may focus on the delicate veins inside a leaf.

Another on the softness of moss or the transparency of water droplets resting on flower petals.

Some studies are detailed and careful. Others are looser and more experimental.

But all of them are built around the same quiet idea:

To observe with curiosity rather than pressure.

And honestly, that is one of the things I love most about sketchbook practice.

It creates space to explore, experiment, and notice things you might otherwise overlook.

  • You can paint.
  • You can make notes.
  • You can test color mixtures.
  • You can study textures, shapes, and tiny details without needing every page to feel “perfect.”

Little by little, the sketchbook becomes less about performance and more about observation, learning, and creative play.

In many ways, this challenge feels somewhere between a watercolor course, a nature journal, and a personal creative retreat.

You are not simply copying reference photos.

You are learning to truly see.

If you’d like to paint alongside me, I also filmed videos throughout the challenge where I guide you through the observational process, watercolor techniques, and sketchbook studies step by step.

Here is the Day 1 video from the Nature & Science Painting Challenge, where we begin by closely studying the beautiful structure and veins of leaves:

Slowing Down Through Observation

One thing I noticed while creating this challenge is how naturally calming observational painting can feel.

When you sit down to paint a mushroom, a bee wing, or a tiny patch of moss, your attention shifts completely.

You begin noticing subtle color changes, soft textures, shadows, reflections, and tiny natural patterns you may have never seen before.

And without even realizing it, you begin slowing down internally as well.

That is really the heart of this challenge.

Not creating “perfect” paintings.
Not filling every sketchbook page beautifully.

But learning to pay attention.

To enjoy the process.
To stay curious.
To let nature guide your creativity rather than pressure it.

The Free Nature & Science Painting Challenge eBook

To make the experience easy to follow, I gathered the entire challenge into a free downloadable eBook.

Inside, you’ll find:

  • Painting prompts & assignments
  • Step-by-step guidance
  • My full sketchbook pages
  • Scientific facts and natural history inspiration
  • Encouragement to enjoy the process

Whether you want to complete the full 12-day journey or simply dip into a few prompts whenever you need inspiration, this is a creative resource you can return to again and again.

There is no pressure.
No deadlines.
No expectation of perfection.

Just observation, curiosity, watercolor, and nature.

This challenge was originally hosted during Summer 2025 as a 12-day artistic journey that invited artists from around the world to slow down, observe closely, and fill their sketchbooks with the quiet wonders of nature.

And honestly, it became something truly special.

Over the course of the challenge, artists painted moss, bees, seed pods, mushrooms, feathers, grass fields, and even tiny water droplets dancing on flower petals.

Each prompt became a small moment of observation, a chance to study, notice, and capture the quiet poetry of the natural world.

What surprised me most was how deeply the challenge resonated with people.

I received so many heartfelt messages from artists saying things like:

“This helped me slow down and fall in love with painting again.”

“I never knew how meditative it could feel to study a single moss patch.”

“For the first time, I feel like an artist and an explorer.”

From complete beginners to experienced watercolor artists, the challenge became a safe and encouraging creative space focused not on perfection, but on curiosity, observation, and enjoying the process together.

With love,
Kristine 🌿
